Factory School

Participation and Affiliation

Want to get involved in the Factory School learning and production collective? As a networked resource, Factory School seeks to enable the work of individuals, as well as learning and production groups, in the development of projects in the arts, education, and public policy. Particular projects have included event planning and archiving, research initiatives, and multiple media document construction, from books to broadcast. To this end, Factory School is accepting proposals for single projects as well as serial or ongoing productions.

Not sure about how to be involved or what it might mean? Individuals seeking to develop single projects should read the Mission Statement before submitting a proposal to a Factory School curator or designer. Potential curators of multiple publication, gallery, or event projects should be familiar with the organization, its works and its values. Where appropriate, please follow the directions in individual CFPs. Otherwise, be sure to include a description of the project, a rationale, and a plan of action or a schedule.

The following role designations represent levels or layers of participation in the Factory School collective. While the language here emphasizes the production side of our learning and production collective, production projects are often linked to specific learning groups who have, by various means, come into contact with Factory School. If you are seeking to participate in a way not described on this page, or if you have any questions, please do not hesitate to write to info "at" factoryschool org.

Roles and Responsibilities

Advisor: An advisor assumes no formal relationship with Factory School but may enter into informal or formal agreements with FS to help in various ways with project development and/or promotion. These persons are selected or nominated by Factory School Designers and Curators and are invited to lend support to a particular project, series, or book and/or (where appropriate) to the Factory School project in general.

Responsibilities: No formal responsibilities to Factory School but a willingness to lend support.

.

Editor: An autonomous individual committed to the principles and ideas of Factory School as stated in the Mission Statement. Editors are invited/commissioned OR submit proposals to a Curator or Designer. This person prepares content (text, audio, video, images, manuscripts, etc.) and submits prepared content to either a Curator OR Designer, depending on the project.

Responsibilities: No formal responsibilities to Factory School beyond a stated commitment to the Factory School mission.

.

Curator: An individual in charge of project or series development, editorial oversight, and project management issues. Curators are invited/commissioned to develop a project/series or submit a proposal to the Designers. Curators work closely with Designers and Editors in designing, formatting, and preparing books and other projects for distribution or display.

Responsibilities: In addition to project oversight, Curators are generally expected to undertake some other aspect of the FS mission: for example, community service, perhaps in conjunction with the curated project; help with distribution, advertisement, promotion; screening and channeling new proposals; recruiting editors; website development or oversight, perhaps in conjunction with the series or other FS series, programs, or projects.

.

Designer: A Curator with production oversight and management responsibilities in the Factory School organization. Designers design, develop, implement, and produce Factory School projects and programs (publications, book series, displays, action research, events) and work intimately with each other and with autonomous Curators. Designers also participate in the ongoing clarification and articulation of the Factory School mission, site architecture, and organizational direction.

Responsibilities: Designers are central to the Factory School collective and are responsible for final project (book, series, research, event, etc.) oversight and decision-making. Designers are expected to contribute time, labor, money, and/or resources beyond the Curatorial and Editorial levels. In particular, Designers assume joint interest in the financial management (investment, return, fund allocation and appropriation) of the FS collective and joint responsibility for developing, maintaining, and realizing ALL FACETS of the Factory School mission.

.

Agency / Institution: Formed within the FS collective, an Agency or Institution is a structural sub-grouping of activities, interests, or people operating in alignment with the broader FS mission. Agencies or Institutions function autonomously while reflecting and supporting broader Factory School objectives.

Responsibilities: At least one member of the Agency or Institution has Curator or Designer status in the FS collective. Agencies and Institutions are also expected to develop and maintain an interface (web page, site, etc.) within the Factory School architecture.
